Orioles to re-sign Pedro Alvarez to minor-league deal

The Orioles have agreed to re-sign left-handed slugger Pedro Alvarez to a minor-league deal, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.

According to multiple reports, the deal won't become official until Alvarez passes his physical, which may not be until Monday.

Alvarez has been working on outfield defense this offseason so that he could become a more flexible option to interested clubs.

In 376 plate appearances with the Orioles last season, Alvarez slashed .249/.322/.504 with 22 home runs, with the strong majority of his appearances coming in the designated hitter's role against right-handed pitchers.

If Alvarez can prove that he's serviceable enough as a corner outfielder, he can serve as solid left-handed insurance for left fielder Hyun Soo Kim and right fielder Seth Smith. Worst case scenario -- Alvarez serves as insurance at first base and designated hitter for Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo, respectively.
