The Orioles finish up their six game homestand with the Oakland Athletics after a deflating series loss to the Angels over the weekend.
The A's come stumbling into town, losing 4 of their last 6 contests between the Royals and Astros. Oakland (54-70) sits 10 games back in the wild card race, totally out of the picture, but can still meddle with the Orioles' playoff hopes this week.
The Orioles (60-64) continue to harm their own playoff aspirations, coming into the series losers of 6 of their last 10 games and 4 games out in the wild card hunt. Baltimore desperately needs to string together some wins, especially against one of the worst teams in the American League.
RHP Chris Smith will get the start for the A's, going 0-2 with a 5.26 ERA in 39 1/3 innings pitched this season. The Orioles rocked Smith's world back on August 10, mashing four homers off the righty in 5 innings of work.
LHP Wade Miley is tabbed to start the series opener for the O's after originally being scheduled to start Sunday. Miley holds a 6-10 record with a 5.21 ERA in 25 starts. Miley got roughed up a bit in his last start, allowing three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss to Seattle.
RHP Paul Blackburn takes the mound for Oakland in the middle game of the series. Blackburn carries a 3.46 ERA and 1.299 WHIP in 9 starts for the A's this season. Blackburn had a rough last start, going only 4 innings allowing eight hits and four runs in a 7-6 loss to Kansas City.
RHP Ubaldo Jimenez will oppose Blackburn on Tuesday looking for a bounce back start. Jimenez is coming off a rough start in Seattle, going 4 1/3 innings allowing six runs on eight hits in a 7-6 loss.
LHP Sean Manaea goes for the A's in the series finale. Manaea hold a 4.58 ERA in 23 starts for Oakland this season. Manaea got rocked by the O's in Oakland on August 12, allowing six runs in 1/3 of an inning before being pulled.
RHP Dylan Bundy will yet again make another start with extra rest for the Orioles on Wednesday. Bundy sports a 4.17 ERA in 23 starts, but has a 2.14 ERA in his last three starts with extra rest. Bundy went 7 innings allowing three runs while striking out ten in a 12-5 win against Oakland last week.
The Orioles need all the help they can get to stay in the Wild Card race. A sweep against the lowly A's is a must have.
