The deal is worth $54 million with $27.5 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Ravens decided not to use the franchise tag on Williams, which would have paid him $13,387,000 in 2017.
Williams, who turned 28 in February, went from being a third-round pick from Division II Missouri Southern State to one of the most coveted free agents available in 2017. (ESPN)
Alright we have alot to talk about here. First, I'm extremely pleased to have Brandon Williams back in Baltimore. He's in the prime of his career and one of the best defensive players in the league. Last season the Ravens defense averaged only 3.7 yards/carry to opposing running backs and Williams was HUGE part of that. Was the signing a catalyst for the future? Yes and no. While he's extremely talented the team had Michael Pierce waiting in the wings (a player I'm extremely high on) and certainly the money going to Brandon Williams could be used to fill several holes on the roster. I don't care. If you can keep a player the caliber of Brandon Williams you do it, especially since he's a great role model and presence in the local community. For a long time the Ravens were viewed as the "bad boys" of the NFL and guys like Williams have helped changed that image.
This year's draft might be "loaded" with interior defensive lineman.......I don't care. Any prospect is a longshot to be a Pro Bowl caliber player and the Ravens had one already in Williams. Done deal.
The first couple days of free agency are over and now is when the Ravens really shine aka finding veteran role players from the bargain bin. Look for Ozzie to add some key pieces to the offense over the next week. Another veteran receiver is a must following Steve Smith Sr's retirement and Kenneth Dixon's suspension will likely force the front office to add another back.
I don't know about you but I'm ready for some Ravens football. Stick with Purple Reign the entire offseason for more updates and be sure to listen to our podcast for your weekly football fix. We'll get through the offseason together. One day at a time. Deep breathes.
